Internet Connection

Does the Xanboo system work over a dial-up Internet connection?
Yes, the Xanboo system works over a dial-up connection such as one provided by AOL, CompuServe, and other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like these.

Does Xanboo provide an Internet Service Provider (ISP) for use with the Xanboo Internet Home Management System?
No, at this time Xanboo does not offer an ISP for use with the Xanboo Internet Home Management System.

Does the Xanboo system work over a broadband ('always on') Internet connection?
Yes, the Xanboo system was designed around the 'always on' service that a DSL, T1, or cable modem connection provides. This type of permanent connection makes it easier and quicker to access your Xanboo.com account to view event notifications, use the Web Cam feature to view real-time video from your cameras, control your cameras and sensors, and utilize other Xanboo features from the Web Site.

Can I use Xanboo with an 'always on' connection such as a cable or DSL Internet service?
Yes, you can use the Xanboo Internet Home Management System with all 'always on' connections. The Xanboo system was designed around the 'always on' service that a DSL, T1, or cable modem connection provides.

Can I use Xanboo with a dial-up Internet service?
Yes, you can use the Xanboo Internet Home Management System with a dial-up Internet service like AOL, CompuServe, and other Internet Service Provider's like these.

What is an 'always on' connection? What is the basic difference between an 'always on' connection and a dial-up connection?
An 'always on' connection is one that is always connected to the Internet, usually through a DSL, T1, or cable modem connection. When you subscribe to an 'always on' service, you don't have to dial up and log on manually to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) each time you want to check e-mail or surf the Web, as you do with a dial-up service such as AOL, CompuServe, and others like these. 'Always on' Internet connections are usually much faster than dial-up service connections.

What are the differences when using Xanboo over a dial-up connection rather than over an 'always on' connection?
There are some major differences when using Xanboo over a dial-up connection rather than over an 'always on' connection.

The first difference is speed. Because an 'always on' connection is usually much faster than a dial-up connection, video clips and video images are transferred much faster from your computer to your Xanboo.com account. Sensor event notifications from your computer to the Web Site also usually arrive faster (see the third difference).

The second difference is related to Xanboo's Web Cam and system remote control feature. You can remotely control some features of your Xanboo Internet Home Management System setup over the Web using a browser. With an 'always on' connection, you always have access to these features and can view your cameras via the Web Cam feature as long as your computer is powered on and your Xanboo software is running on it with the On button activated (set for online). With a dial-up connection, the same requirements apply, and you must first be sure that your computer is connected to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) before leaving it so you can remotely control your system and use the Web Cam feature.

The third difference concerns sensor event notifications. When your Xanboo System Controller receives a sensor alert after a sensor is triggered, the Xanboo software is designed to send an event notification to your Xanboo.com account. With a dial-up connection, the software must first 1) dial up your Internet Service Provider (ISP), 2) log onto your service, and 3) connect to your Xanboo.com account before it can send, or post, the event notification. With an 'always on' connection, the dial-up and login steps are eliminated, allowing for faster connections to the Web Site and therefore faster event notifications.

Does my service fee include an Internet connection or an Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
No, your Xanboo monthly subscription does not provide Internet access. You need to arrange for an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and install its application software or browser software (like Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape) in your computer to use the Xanboo Internet Home Management System.

What Internet Service Providers (ISPs) does the Xanboo system work with?
At last count there were about 7000 ISPs nationwide. Although it's impossible for us to test Xanboo with all of them, we have tested and used the Xanboo system successfully with most of the major ISPs such as AOL, Compuserve, and Prodigy. These providers account for about 75% of all Internet users in the U.S.

Can I use the Xanboo System Controller and Xanboo software behind a personal firewall on a home network?
Yes, you can set up and use your Xanboo System Controller and your Xanboo software behind a personal firewall on a home network. Firewall tests of the Xanboo system included ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm 2.1, Win98's ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) feature, on a home network connected to the Internet via a cable modem. ZoneAlarm was installed on a client machine on which the Xanboo System Controller and Xanboo software were installed. The tests were successful. Note: We do not in any way endorse the use of ZoneAlarm. It is cited here only as an example to show that our products-- the Xanboo System Controller and Xanboo software -- work normally when ZoneAlarm is installed.

What's wrong with my Internet connection? The Xanboo software is unable to establish an automatic dial-up connection with my free Internet Service Provider (ISP) account, AOL, or Compuserve2000, although I am able to connect with these ISPs manually. What could be wrong?

There are two types of Internet connections: 'always on' and dial-up. You must first determine which type you use.

A) 'Always On':
Problem: Xanboo is unable to confirm a connection to your 'always on' Internet Service Provider (ISP).
If the 'always on' test connection fails, do the following:

  • Check that the physical connection from your computer to the network (via DSL, T1, cable modem, LAN, or Ethernet connection) is secure.
  • Make sure that your computer is configured correctly for the type of connection you are using!
  • Then try to connect to the Internet just through your browser, as you usually would.
If these steps are successful, then likely there is a problem with the Xanboo web site Please try to connect again a little later.

B) Dial-Up:
Problem: Xanboo is unable to initiate a connection to your dial-up Internet Service Provider (ISP), but you are able to connect to your ISP manually.
If the dial-up test connection fails, do the following:
  • If the dial-up test connection fails, if you use a free ISP, make sure that the password you use when connecting to the service is saved within the ISP application software's login window. For example, if there is a checkbox in the ISP login window which allows you to 'Save password,' you should enable it. Note that the password is actually saved after you connect successfully with your ISP with the 'Save password' box checked. You can confirm that the password is saved if the 'Save password' box is checked and the password box is not empty when you open your ISP's login window.
  • When you are prompted to provide a phone number for your dial-up connection during setup, you must enter your ISP dial-up number exactly as you would dial it manually. For example, if you dial any codes or extra numbers before you dial your ISP's number (a 1 before the area code, for instance), make sure you include them when you set up the dial-up option within the Xanboo software or your ISP's application software, whichever way you do it.
  • AOL and CompuServe allow you to create multiple screen names (user names). Make sure that AOL and CompuServe are set up with the same screen name you provided the Xanboo system during setup The screen names that AOL and CompuServe are set up with are the screen names that you see when you launch AOL and CompuServe.
  • If you use AOL, you must disable pop-up marketing messages. In AOL 5.0, you can find these settings under My AOL -> Preferences -> Marketing -> Pop-up.
  • When the Xanboo software is establishing a dial-up connection to your free ISP, AOL, or Compuserve2000, you must not respond to any messages or windows that these ISPs may display.
Some ISPs allow you to access your account via a dial-up connection as well as via a LAN (that is, an 'always on' connection). Whichever mode you use, make sure you've set up the Xanboo system accordingly.

Note -- For better dial-up performance, consider the following suggestions:
  1. All Free ISPs place an advertisement banner on the screen when they connect to the Internet. Most ISPs provide a setting that defines how to place the ad banner. This option is usually found as 'docking options' under Settings in the ISP application software. Set this option to 'no docking'.
  2. Some ISPs have a setting that controls whether the connection should close if there is no activity. If there is such a setting, set it to the largest possible value.
