Aprilaire 8870 Communicating Thermostat Questions
General Thermostat Questions and Answers
1. Where should my thermostat be located?
To assure accurate temperature control, the thermostat should be mounted on an inside wall in a frequently occupied space that best represents the building's temperature. The thermostat should be mounted at least 18" from any outside wall and approximately 5' above the floor. DO NOT place the thermostat:
- Behind doors, in corners or other dead air spaces
- In direct sunlight or near lamps, appliances or other sources of heat
- On an outside wall or a wall exposed to an unconditioned space (e.g., garage, etc.)
- In the flow path of a supply register, in stairways or near outside doors
- On a wall where concealed pipes and/or ductwork will affect the thermostat
- Near sources of electrical interference such as arcing relay contacts
2. What is the Auto Mode and why would I use it?
The Auto Mode will allow the thermostat to cycle heating or cooling equipment as the building temperature moves outside the comfort zone that you have entered as heat and cool set points in your thermostat. Use this position for optimum comfort and control.
3. When should I use emergency heat? (Heat pumps only)
Emergency heat should be used when there is a problem with your heat pump compressor or when the heat pump is not maintaining your comfort level.
4. Why does "- -" appear when I press the outdoor button?
There is no outdoor temperature sensor attached to the thermostat.
5. Why does the clock flash 12:00?
The thermostat has lost power and the clock needs to be reset.
Aprilaire 8500 Series Questions
1. How do I change the temperature temporarily?
On the Aprilaire 8500 Series Thermostats, adjust up or down buttons to the desired temperature. The thermostat will maintain that set point for three hours. For indefinite override, press "hold" and adjust the thermostat to the desired temperature. The thermostat will maintain that set point until the resume button is pressed.
2. Why is the flame or snowflake flickering on the Aprilaire 8500 Series Thermostat?
The flickering flame or snowflake indicates that the thermostat is actively making a call for heat (flame) or air cooling (snowflake).
3. Why does the display show AC?
The thermostat has lost power from the heating or air conditioning equipment. This may occur during a power outage or during service to your HVAC Equipment.
4. How do I change the thermostat to read F? or C?
On an Aprilaire 8500 Series Thermostat, press the "." and "/" buttons simultaneously.
5. Between heating and cooling season, I want to turn my system off. Will this change the program?
If you want to turn your system off, press the mode button on your 8500 Series Thermostat until "OFF" appears.

8870 Frequently Asked Questions
How many sensor modules may I attach to one 8870 thermostat?
The Aprilaire model 8870 thermostat can accommodate up to 4 sensor modules.
What sensor modules are available for the Aprilaire model thermostat?
Aprilaire offers the 8061 sensor module that will accept two external sensors or the model 8062 which is an humidity sensor with the ability to interface one external sensor. Sensors include; flush mounted wall, outdoor air and duct as example. Call Aprilaire for more information.
Where should I mount the 8870 thermostat?
The Aprilaire model 8870 thermostat can be mounted in almost any location. Typical examples, other than an occupied space, are a mechanical room or closet when the thermostat has appropriate sensors, such as a flush mount, attached to it for monitoring or control.
What does the red light indicate on the top of the 8870?
You will notice the red led on the top of the thermostat blink on and off while the thermostat
initializes. After initialization the red led is not normally illuminated. If you are using the model 8870 in a heat pump application the illumination of the red led would indicate that your auxiliary emergency heat has been turned on.
Is there a use for the top display on the thermostat?
The top display of the 8870 thermostat will display two types of messages, permanent and temporary messages. Permanent messages scroll continually while temporary messages flash. Temporary messages need to be reset to be removed. Examples of use would be e-mail alert or stock quote.
Can I use the 24 vac from the HVAC equipment to power the 8870?
If you are connecting the model 8870 thermostat to an automation system it is recommended that you use the 24vac that is provided by the model 8818 distribution panel. If you are using the 8870 in a stand-alone fashion then using the 24vac from the HVAC equipment is fine.
Do I have to use cat5 cable to connect the 8870 to the HVAC equipment?
You do not have to use cat5. Thermostat wire is recommended and preferred.
Will an 8870 replace an 884X series thermostat used in an automation system?
Yes, however a few modifications need to be made to the addressing of the thermostats as well as the removal of the communication board from the disty panel, if installed. It is suggested that you consult document number DP 10005754 or call Technical Support.
Please explain the settings of SW1 on the back of the 8870?
The switches are used to control some of the features of the thermostat. SW1-1 Master/Slave should always be in the slave position when used with an automation system, SW1-2 Electric/Fossil will be set to your heating plant type, SW1-3 Single/Multi is set to the number of stages your HVAC has, SW1-4 Ht. Pump/H-C would be set to Ht. Pump for a heat pump application and H/C for and standard heat/cool system. For more clarification on these settings refer to document B2202660.
What are the jumper settings for block JP5?
All jumpers should be in place.
What are the jumper settings for block JP7?
Both jumpers should be off or on only one pin each.
What are balance points and why would I want to use them?
Balance points are used to limit the operation of your heat pump when outdoor air temperatures are either too high or low. You should consult with a qualified service technician before making changes in this sub-menu
Please explain display temp offset.
This setting is used for calibration of the 8870 thermostat. The offset has a span of +/- 3 degrees from the displayed temperature. In most cases the offset should be kept at 0. The accuracy of the Aprilaire model 8870 is +/- 1 degree of actual ambient. You should consult with a qualified service technician before making changes in this sub-menu.
What is the default security code for the thermostat
The factory default is 7777.
