For a whole house test, use the X10 transmitter of your choice to continuously send an X10 transmission. (i.e. ELK Magic Module, ELK-MM443). Then move the ESM1 to various AC receptacles located around the house to verify the signal.

The ESM1 listens to your power line, and displays signal strength of any activity at the X10 frequency. It also measures and displays any signal between 100mV and 5 volts (The maximum specified X10 signal strength). The bar graph LED readout shows signal strength level, while the "X10 Good" light indicates whether valid X10 traffic is being received. The ESM1 is the best value choice for test tools.
