This product has been discontinued.
The replacement product is the 8AH485D
Available in 2 Models:
- 8AH485: with RS-485 Input
- 8AH232: with RS-232 Input
|
The hub is designed to be wired between any RS-232/485 or PC-compatible home control system (like the StarGate, TimeCommander Plus, etc.) and the peripheral devices it controls (i.e. LCD keypads , TR15 thermostats , Zone panels , etc.).

Because the hub has its own dedicated 12V power supply, it can easily transmit signals and power to the peripheral devices.
This 8-port expansion hub uses the RS-485 protocol, which is not only more powerful than the RS-232 protocol, but is also easier and more affordable to install. Because RS-485 signals travel farther along the line, you can run dedicated cable without having to purchase expensive repeaters, couplers, amplifiers. You'll also save money by reducing the amount of wiring used, since devices connected to the RS-485 line can be daisy chained, instead of home run.
Each channel has a separate RS-485 driver, which can transmit signals along 4,000 ft. of cable on each channel. Other features include 2-wire half-duplex operation and 4-wire screw terminal strips (2 power, 2 data). The unit also offers such optional features as a two-way RS-232/485 converter and 16-device configuration. Configuring to RS-232 requires inserting a commonly available Dallas Semiconductor DS275 chip into an open socket on the board (chip not included). Dimensions are 6" x 4" x 1.5". A 12V power supply is included.
Features
|
- 8 Individual RS-485 channels allow home-run style wiring
- Simplify installation by running signals on longer cable runs, without amplifiers
- Unlike X10, RS-485 signals won't be diminished by electrical noise
- RS-485 or RS-232 Converter Input
- CommStar Network Device
- True STAR Wiring Hub
- NO Network Termination Issues
- 4000 Ft Line Length On Each Channel
- 12VDC Network Power Distribution
- 4 Wire Terminal Strip: 2 Power, 2 Data
- Hubs can be daisy chained for 64 channels
CommStar Network Star Wiring Hub
RCS CommStar Network Control Units with the CommStar RS-485 network port can connect to this external 8 channel active hub to provide a STAR wiring connection to the NCU. Also can be used with NCU's with internal 8 channel hubs for further expansion.
RS485 Active Hub
The unit has 8 independent RS-485 output channels each with their own driver. All outputs see input data simultaneously. Each input channel is equipped with automatic send data control to allow for + duplex transmission
Expansion: Each output channel can be connected to another hub, allowing expansion to 64 channels.
Optional RS-232 Converter Input
Model 8AH232 has an RS-232 master input, which is converted to RS-485 and distributed out the 8 channels.
STAR Wiring
Each channel is independent and allows for home run or star wiring to each channel without using the typical RS485 daisy chain wiring. This eliminates concerns about terminations. Since each line has it's own driver, each line can be 4000 ft.
NOTE:You can use daisy chain wiring on EACH channel of the HUB to connect up to 255 devices, IF you observe the RS-485 network connection and termination requirements. The last device in the daisy chain on each channel requires 100 Ohm line termination.
