Using the Symbol cordless barcode scanner, you scan the UPC barcode on products you purchase or discard. Once you connect the scanner to your computer, ShopWizard software will create your grocery list and keep a record of what you have in inventory, so you'll know exactly what you need to buy.
Compatible with Serial and USB connections.

Ways to Use
There are 3 ways to use the ShopWizard system: Complete Inventory, Purchase Only, and Discard Only. We suggest Complete Inventory for most users.
|
- Complete Inventory:
You scan items that you purchase and discard. ShopWizard tracks your inventory, just like large warehouses, and develops your grocery list. As features are added to ShopWizard, it will be able to tell you what you purchased for a month or year. It will also be available on your handheld computer.
- Purchase Only:
You only scan the items you purchase. Over time, ShopWizard will predict the products you will need based on your utilization rate. Since this isn't an exact inventory, this isn't a complete grocery list either.
- Discard Only:
You only scan items you discard. ShopWizard will keep track of your discards and tell you that you need more. This doesn't provide a complete inventory, but will provide an accurate grocery list.
Reports
The power of collecting barcode information lies in the processing of the data. ShopWizard has 5 different reports, each report is sortable by our predefined categories or your user defined categories. Each type of report is available for download in PDF format (click the 'Reports' link in the 'More Information' section at left). The information ShopWizard collects and displays helps your household or business figure out exactly where your money goes.
About UPCs
Universal Product Code (UPC) is the sequence of vertical bars that the scanner reads and interprets as a sequence of numbers. There are many formats of barcodes, however, in the USA UPC-A and UPC-E are the standard. As ShopWizard continues to develop more barcodes will be supported; the next 2 will be EAN 13 and EAN 14.
- UPC-A: This is the main barcode in use on commercial products in the USA. It consists of 6 digits which determine the manufacturer, then 5 digits which determine the manufacturer's products, and 1 check digit which lets us know that the scan is correct.
- UPC-E: This is just a shortened version of the UPC-A barcode. It eliminates extra zeros (0) by making assumptions about where they are in the code. This code is useful for products whose size is so small that they don't have room for the full UPC-A code.
- Terrible Two's: A UPC code that starts with a 2 is defined by your grocer. Normally a grocer will also embed the department and the price in this code. Since these codes will change from grocer to grocer and from day to day, ShopWizard does not track these codes. Instead, we allow you to assign any of the UPC codes starting with a 2 to products you want that might not have a UPC code.
- The Ever Changing UPC Data Problem: With 800,000 manufacturer codes available and 100,000 product codes per manufacturer, there are a possible 80,000,000,000 products that can exist. Luckily, not all these codes are in use, but many are. The goal is to make available the ones you use. We currently have over 270,000 UPC codes and add more via the Shop Wizard Community.
The Future
As the number of ShopWizard users increases, more codes will be incorporated into the software. The handling of EAN 13 and EAN 14 UPC codes is of the utmost importance. Countries other than the USA use these codes, rather than UPC A and UPC E. A few international cosmetic products sold in this country don't have UPC A and E codes, only EAN codes.
ShopWizard is also developing software for the Handspring Visor and the Symbol CSM 150. This combination will allow you to have your complete inventory in the palm of your hand while you shop.
