  About Remote Controls
All of our Remote Controls communicate via either RF (Radio Frequency) or IR (Infrared Frequency). X10 is another means of remote control, but rather than using the airwaves, X10 commands are sent over your home's existing electrical powerlines. RF and IR remote controls can be made to control X10 devices by way of a transceiver module, which plugs into a standard wall outlet. The transceiver (transmitter/receiver) receives the remote control's IR or RF control signals and translates them into X10 commands. Thus, using your tv or home theater remote, you're enabled to control lighting, appliances, thermostats, the security system, and more.

Radio Frequency Remotes
RF remotes are used where long range and high security are required. To prevent unauthorized code hacking, our RF security remotes employ proprietary communication protocols, and are, therefore, only compatible with the receivers for which they're designed. Our long range remotes operate at ranges of up to 1 mile and, like all RF remotes, can communicate through most non-metallic objects, such as walls, floors, & glass. Please note, however, that manufacturers specify range based on line-of-site operation; therefore, a shorter range of operation will be experienced when used within a home. For example, a remote rated at up to 100 feet may only have a 50 to 75 foot range when used in the actual operating environment.

RF keychain remotes offer the convenience and security of controlling, from your car, your entry and interior lighting, garage door, front door, locks, and security system. It's easier and less expensive than you might think. Click here to learn how to integrate an RF remote control system with other devices in your home.

Infrared Remotes
IR is the protocol most commonly used in home entertainment remotes. It's line-of-site only, and the transmission range is usually limited to about 30 feet, however, as discussed below, an IR distribution system will provide virtually unlimited range. IR is not a secure method of communication, as the codes are openly published in an industry standard IR code library. Universal IR remotes have this library built in, which allows them to control most any manufacturer's devices. For controlling components whose codes are not in the library, learning remotes are available which can be taught the code of any device. A common feature of universal remotes is the ability to group commands, so as to actuate, with one button, several components simultaneously, such as the TV, satellite receiver, and amplifier. Using an Infrared Command Center, you can also control any X10 device.

Distributing IR signals throughout the home is easy. Wall mounted or tabletop IR receivers, sometimes called 'targets,' are installed in rooms where control is desired. The receivers relay the signals through amplifiers and connecting blocks to IR emitters, which are glued to each audio/video component's IR target window. Alternatively, a single IR emitter, or 'blaster,' can be positioned in front of the equipment rack, to control all components. For applications where running wires is untenable, the PowerMid IR Extender system allows sending of IR commands from the viewing and/or listening area, wirelessly, through walls and floors, to the room where the audio/video components are installed.

A Universal Learning IR Remote can provide control of every system in your home. Turn on the TV, dim the lighting, set the thermostat, close the blinds, and start the fireplace, all with one button, and without ever getting out of bed or your favorite chair.
