RCS HVAC zone controllers operate multiple, independent comfort zones in your home using your single heating and A/C system! Zoning reduces energy use by not heating or cooling unused zones. Improves comfort level within the home by allowing independent control of each zone's temperature. In addition, zoning improves your system's efficiency by satisfying heat/cool calls faster, and extends the HVAC system life reducing run times! For two story homes, the thermal equalizer feature does away with the age old problem of too much heat upstairs and too little downstairs, and provides for further energy savings by recycling the excess upstairs heat to the lower levels. These zone products work great in combination with RCS thermostats for communicating control by X10 or RS232/485 systems. Easily installed and comes in a compact 6" x 8" x 1.5" one pound chassis.
RCS Zone Controllers Overview
In most homes, heating and cooling accounts for the largest part of the energy bill. Despite this, most homes waste a tremendous amount of heat and cool air through inefficient use. Efficiency can be significantly improved by only heating or cooling when necessary (i.e.. when occupants are present) and by only heating/cooling to the exact desired temperature. Home automation and zoned HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning) can do this for you automatically. You can set different desired temperatures in each room and by using motion detectors you can automatically turn ON/OFF the heating/cooling to each zone as people enter and leave. The energy savings in the average home over just a few years will often pay for the entire home automation system.
A simple common-sense analysis of un-zoned systems will show you how much you can save. Imagine a 2-zone home with one zone being the living room and the other being the bedroom. An un-zoned system will always heat/cool both rooms at the same time even if only one zone is being occupied. This means that twice as much energy is being used as necessary. Add to that any periods when the system is accidentally left on when no one is home and you can see how wasteful this system can be. An automated zoned system will only heat/cool the room that is being occupied. The occupied room will also be heated or cooled to the desired temperature much faster. This is because the energy that would otherwise be wasted on the unoccupied room is being directed to the occupied room.
Convert a standard heating and cooling system into a system that provides independent temperature control of 2 to 4 zones within a home. Simply install a thermostat in each zone and then wire them to the zone controller. Install dampers in the ducts feeding the different zones and wire those back to the zone controller. Finally, connect the zone controller to your heating/cooling system. The zone controller will automatically coordinate damper and HVAC system control to maintain the temperatures set in each zone.
This controller will work with most standard electronic thermostats and gas/electric heating systems and A/C systems. Uses 24VAC normally open dampers, automatic heat/cool changeover, built-in short cycle protection for A/C compressor.
Thermal equalizer version for 2-story homes uses timed re-circulating cycles during lower floor heat calls to prevent excessive heat build up in upper floors. Also helps save energy by recycling heat back to lower floor. Combine with any of the X10 or RS232/485 thermostats for additional zone control through your intelligent controller.
THERMAL EQUALIZER Feature
The ZTE version of the controllers includes the exclusive patented THERMAL EQUALIZER feature. This is used in two story, forced air applications to reduce the effects of heat stratification. Heat rises naturally and during heating cycles the upstairs zone tends to overheat. This loss of heat to the upstairs keeps the downstairs zone cooler and calling for more heat. This process continues until the upstairs is uncomfortably hot and the downstairs is still calling for more heat.
To balance this natural phenomena, the THERMAL EQUALIZER feature will monitor the length of time the heat has been calling downstairs and after a selectable time period, will stop the heat call and recycle the overheated upstairs air back down to the downstairs zone. This "equalizer cycle" will reduce the heat buildup upstairs and put the heat back downstairs where it is still needed. The net effect is a more comfortable temperature in the upstairs zone and an energy saving reuse of the excess heat in the downstairs zone.
The Thermal Equalizer feature monitors Zone 1 for heat run times and this zone must be the "downstairs zone". When the Thermal Equalizer cycle is on, the Zone 2 damper will be closed and the high speed fan turned on. Zone 2 must be the "upstairs zone" when using the Thermal Equalizer feature.
